FIMA Lifesavers

Empowering communities with life-saving skills

Background

FIMA Lifesavers is a global initiative that started in 2014, organised by the British Islamic Medical Association (BIMA), with the aim of educating the public on essential Basic Life Support (BLS) skills — including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and airway management during choking. The project brings healthcare professionals together to teach these life-saving techniques in mosques worldwide, fostering unity and service to the community. It is conducted annually on the last Saturday of September, simultaneously across countries including the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Kenya, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Malawi, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Objective

The FIMA Lifesavers programme in Malaysia focuses on creating public awareness and teaching Basic Life Support (BLS) — including CPR, the Heimlich manoeuvre for choking, first aid, and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED). By equipping participants with these crucial skills, the programme aims to increase awareness of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and empower individuals to respond effectively in emergencies, fostering a sense of responsibility, togetherness and preparedness within the community.
